FAQ

1. Why do I need hosting and a domain?

Four elements make up a website: hosting, domain content and code.

The easiest way to explain how these fit together is to imagine your website as a house.

Firstly, you'll require an address so others can find you easily, this is where purchase your domain, for example www.example.com - we can do this for you and advise you on choosing the right domain [.com, .org, .tv etc etc]

Secondly, you'll need to get your website online. Hosting is required to store all the files, content and code that make up your website in a place online that everyone can access securely. So in the case of the house, this would constitute a network of roads that bring traffic to your address/ domain.

Third, once you have these in place it is time to decorate! Written copy, imagery or photography will personalise your website.

Fourth, code are the bricks and mortar of the house - what holds everything together. When we test the website before launch, we go around the site to check that the walls of the house have been built sturdily and will not collapse. We also check accessibility to ensure the website is accessible for disabled users.

As your website becomes more popular, it will see more visitors who will contribute to general wear and tear of the site, this is why it may be necessary to close the site for a short period to time for maintenance [just like spring cleaning your house - this is needed online too]. This increased volume of traffic may also result in too many people trying to access your site, in this case the roads leading to your house will get clogged resulting in no-one visiting the house. Maintenance, improvement and widening of these roads become necessary to ensure the traffic can flow to and from your house easily.
